Meet The Team: Lisa Schreiber – Engel & Völkers Santa Maria

In this series of blog entries, we would like to introduce you to our team members, to finally put a face behind the company. We’re kicking off with the most important pillar of our office, who’s been rocking this boat with us for over 18 years in Santa Maria, Mallorca Central.

The insights:

How many years have you been at the company: I’ve been at Engel & Völkers Mallorca Central license for almost 18 years (anniversary in April), working hand-in-hand with Christina Deutsch ever since. I worked my way through the company starting off as a Team Assistant with some Marketing background, and for the last years as Managing Director of the company.

For how long have you been living in Mallorca? I moved to this beautiful island (and now living in a cosy townhouse in Binissalem) in August 2001, so nearly 23 years ago - so more of my life here than in Germany.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in a small village in the South of Germany, just at the Swiss border near Zürich.

What made you move to Mallorca? After completing my Abitur, I wanted to immerse myself in Spain for a year to learn the language. What was meant to be a one-year stay turned into a 23-year chapter in Mallorca. Enchanted by Spain's cultural and vibrant life, Mallorca became the backdrop to my personal and academic journey.

For my degree, I chose the University of the Illes Balears in Palma. The decision marked a new chapter beyond a typical study abroad experience. Mallorca ceased to be a temporary haven, evolving into the cherished local where I built connections and quickly became my new home. The initial idea to come over “just” to learn Spanish transformed into a lifelong journey.

What do you like most about the island? Mallorcas nature, definitely, the Tramuntana mountains, the landscapes, the beaches and small hidden bays and for sure the Majorcan people. Beyond captivating landscapes, the warmth and authenticity of the Majorcan people define the sense of home. Genuine hospitality, rich cultural heritage, and a deep connection to the land create an atmosphere of familiarity. After all these years, I feel that it's my home. 

What made you want to go into real estate and how did you end up at Engel & Völkers? It was pure coincidence... While pursuing a Tourism degree at UIB in Palma, I stumbled into the hotel industry, realizing it didn't align with my passions. Serendipity struck when I saw a job offer from Engel & Völkers in a Majorcan newspaper. Intrigued, I applied and, to my delight, started with E&V a few weeks later. This fortuitous move marked a transformative shift from the hospitality sector to real estate, unveiling a fulfilling career aligned with my aspirations. What seemed like a twist of fate turned out to be a well-timed opportunity, shaping my professional identity beyond my initial academic pursuits.

What is something you like the most at your job? My work is a dynamic and enriching experience, involving constant interaction with people from diverse backgrounds. This allows me to use various languages daily, fostering a global exchange. Assisting individuals in realizing their dreams, whether finding the perfect home or facilitating transactions, is exceptionally rewarding. Providing top-notch service daily adds purpose to my work, positively impacting lives. Working with the exceptional team at our Mallorca branch is more than just a job; it's a collaborative journey marked by mutual respect and a commitment to excellence. Despite industry turnover, our team's enduring bonds stand out. The stable and permanent team on the island reflects not only professional competence but also their character as good, reliable, and dedicated individuals. Together, we navigate challenges and celebrate successes, creating a work environment that feels like a close-knit family.

Tell us what has been your favorite (or most memorable) sale or deal with a client? We had a very emotional situation during a notary appointment, as the seller had to leave the island & sell because of an illness, and he (including me), got very emotional. The new buyers promised to take care of their house, it was very human and kind. This encounter is a reminder that real estate transactions encapsulate people's lives beyond paperwork. In that tearful notary room, humanity took center stage, emphasizing the profound impact of kindness and understanding in an industry centered on homes and the lives they shelter.

As a foreigner, have you ever felt that you were not well accepted? Absolutely not. I speak fluent Spanish and Mallorquin. For me, it has always been about embracing the culture of the place where I live and learning the languages as quick as possible. I believe that individuals relocating to a foreign country with the goal of establishing permanent residency should view learning the local language as a genuine sign of appreciation for the host culture.
