The 4 most picturesque villages in Mallorca
Even though Mallorca is famous for its breathtaking beaches and stunning coves, this wonderful Mediterranean island is also home to beautiful picturesque towns and villages. The typical architecture of the island, the natural scenery and the authentic charm of these four villages will most definitely leave you speechless.
Fornaltux – adorable village once crowned ‘Spain’s Prettiest Village’
Back in 2017, Fornalutx was selected among thirteen villages in Spain to be a part of Spain's Most Beautiful Villages Association. One of the requirements was that the village had less than 1500 inhabitants and boasted important architectural and/or natural features. No wonder Fornalutx made it on the list! Its honey-coloured buildings and cobblestoned streets, rich traditions and stunning landscapes of rolling hills dotted with orange and lemon trees that surround the village will make you fall deeply in love with it.
Valldemossa – pure Majorcan charm on a hillside of the Tramuntana mountains
There are not many places that can boast of having been a source of inspiration for one of the greatest musicians in history. Valldemossa, however, can. It was the place chosen by Frederic Chopin and poet George Sand to spend the winter of 1838. This rural town located in the mountains of west Mallorca lies in an idyllic valley in the midst of the Tramuntana mountain range. Valldemossa’s quiet streets are filled with shops, cafés, art galleries and restaurants. This timeless town is a ‘must visit’ with its Carthusian monastery, faded pink stone houses and the Costa Nord Cultural Centre, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year.
Sóller - a magical place located in a north-western valley
Located in a lush valley of orange groves between the mountains and the sea, Sóller is a typical old Mediterranean town made up of narrow streets lined with traditional style residential townhouses with the famous green Majorcan shutters. Its main square, ‘Plaça de la Constitució’ is sprinkled with cafés where you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a freshly pressed orange juice. This main square is also where the weekly market takes place, offering all kinds of local fresh products, crafts and more. Sóller is also a place rich in history, full of beautiful architecture and art galleries that are worth a visit. The port with the same name is located only a couple of minutes away and you can reach it by riding a vintage tram that is the continuation of the traditional train going from Palma’s city centre all the way to Sóller. If you’re looking for an authentic Majorcan adventure, it’s this train and tram ride!
Living in Mallorca’s West
The villages that are scattered across the west region stand for peace and tranquillity. With villages strung out along the coastline and across the mountain tops and beautiful remote beaches, the unrivalled beauty of the island of the west region of Mallorca will amaze you. The variety of properties along the west coast ranges from new-built apartments on the seafront, to traditional townhouses in the inland villages, to luxury country houses with land and swimming pools in the mountains. If you’d ask us for one word to define the lifestyle in this area it would definitely by ‘privacy’. And it’s not just Sóller, Valldemossa and Fornaltux that are attractive to investors, there are also villages such as Deià, Banyalbufar, Llucalcari. To the south, Estellencs, that offer enchanting townhouses, as well as prestigious estates with views towards the azure sea, all off the beaten track. If you’d like to have a look at the wide range of properties Engel & Völkers Mallorca offers in the area.
Cala Figuera – authentic harbour in Mallorca’s southeast
Cala Figuera, located in Santanyí, to the southeast of the island, is a small, attractive harbour devoted to fishing. It is a recreational marina with just over a hundred moorings. Cala Figuera spreads two ways in the shape of a ‘Y’, creating the Caló d’en Busques and the Caló d’en Boira. Caló d’en Busques is home to one of the most protected fishing ports of the archipelago. No question asked, the wooden boats, the small fishermen houses and the artisanal docks are a beautiful scenario to take a walk and soak up Majorcan charm. Beautiful sunsets and rich historical heritage make this location very special. Cala Figuera is really close to Santanyí, a traditional rural town famous for its gold stone architecture and weekly market.
