Top 10 Viewpoints in Mallorca
Whether you were born in Mallorca, on holiday or you have decided to call the island home, these 10 striking viewpoints never fail to inspire. From historic buildings overlooking the city of Palma and the Mediterranean Sea to panoramic vistas from the undeniably beautiful Tramuntana Mountains on the western coast, here are ten of our favourite ‘miradors’ across the island.
1. Bellver Castle (Palma)
Let’s start in the city of Palma at a classic mirador, which means ‘viewpoint’ in Spanish. Take a stroll up Calle Bellver to Bellver Castle, a 14th-century Gothic-style fort built for King Jaume II. Explore the castle and learn about its history while enjoying the panoramic views of the city, the bay and the surrounding area. A car park awaits at the top, but check the opening hours, which may change depending on the season.
2. Son Vida (Palma)
Inland from Bellver, the exclusive enclave of Son Vida has hill-top views of the Mediterranean Sea and beyond. If you walk to the highest point at Calle Albercuix, you can see the Bay of Palma and the whole city. Note that the roads are very steep, but there is plenty of parking.
3. Hermitage of Portals Nous (Calvià)
In the southwest municipality of Calvià, you will find Portals Nous, a cosmopolitan coastal neighbourhood with an abundance of luxurious properties, not to mention its port lined with superyachts. At the end of Calle Oratori, the Hermitage of Portals Nous provides excellent views across the port, the crescent of golden sand and around the coast. There is a small car park and street parking although there are fewer available spaces during the high season.
4. El Toro (Calvià)
Down the coast, the El Toro viewpoint offers breathtaking views over the Mediterranean Sea. In fact, from this point, you can see the Illa del Toro, a small rocky island surrounded by other islets. Park your car on Avinguda del Mar.
5. Illes Malgrats (Santa Ponça)
Another highly Instagrammable spot on the coast of Calviá is in Santa Ponça, where you can view the Illes Malgrats from the Malgrats viewpoint and other points nearby. This group of small islets, part of a marine reserve, are dramatically rocky, decorated with moss green and surrounded by the sapphire blue sea. Head to the viewpoint situated on Gran Vía dels Malgrats.
6. Puig de la Moneda (Valldemossa)
Valldemossa is quite literally as pretty as a picture. Nestled in the green Tramuntana Mountains, the golden stone village evokes an air of magic. A magnet for the bohemian set, musicians and writers, like Frederic Chopin and George Sand, have walked its charming cobbled streets over the years. Marvel at the spectacular views of the island from Puig de La Moneda, where the mountains meet the sea. In fact, the viewpoint is situated in the George Sand housing development, five kilometres from the village. Parking is available on Carrer del Mig.
7. Sa Foradada (Deià)
On the island’s western coast between Valldemossa and Deià, you will pass the Son Marroig viewpoint, named after the historic mansion bought by Archduke Lluis Salvador in the late 1800s. From here, walk to the famous but remote paella restaurant of Sa Foradada, which is also an infamous Instagram spot during the summer. Another popular place is Puig de la Moneda.
8. Cap Gros lighthouse (Port de Sóller)
Get the best views of Port de Sóller from this lighthouse which you can reach on foot from the port. The steep route is around one and a half kilometres, where you will find a car park and the Muleta Refuge. Visit here just before dusk for the most spectacular sunsets.
9. Es Colomer (Pollença)
On the drive to Formentor, make a pitstop at Es Colomer viewpoint, where you will have wide-open views of Cap de Formentor at the northernmost point of the island. Please note that parking is not always possible along this road.
10. Cap de Formentor lighthouse (Pollença)
One of the most emblematic viewpoints on the whole island is the winding road to Cap de Formentor. Because this is such a popular summer selfie spot, roads are restricted during peak months. We suggest that you take the shuttle bus or have a drink in the restaurant, where you can capture the staggering view from upstairs. Highly recommended all year round.
