What's on in Mallorca in September?
And so begins the transition to autumn. But that doesn't mean we say “adiós” to the warmth and eternal sunshine because this is Mallorca. September means the kids go back to school, which means that the streets - and beaches - are generally quieter, making it a great time to make the most of the island, in terms of culture and sports. As always, we are sharing our favourite events so that you can enjoy September. Have fun.
Art in the city of Palma
Every September, the capital of Palma hosts the Nit de l’Art, Mallorquín for “the Night of Art”, which falls on 23 September this year. Museums and galleries across the city open their doors from 6 pm to 11 pm, so everyone can explore the fine architecture of these beautiful buildings and the latest in contemporary art and beyond. This open-house event has been running for almost three decades to celebrate the strong artistic and cultural energy coursing through Palma, which has become one of the gallery hotspots in the Mediterranean. Immerse yourself in art and culture, and enjoy a glass of cava or two. Palma’s Old Town and its surroundings are some of the most desirable property locations on the island. Traditional fiestas
Embrace the cultural roots of the island through its local festivals and there are plenty this month. On 16 September at noon in Binissalem in central Mallorca, at the heart of the island’s wine-making industry, the town celebrates the Festa des Vermar to mark the end of the grape-picking season. This culmination of two weeks of events, from parades to wine tasting, is the climax of the fiesta known as the Gran Batalla de Raïm or the “Battle of the Grapes”. Wear your old clothes because the villagers and visitors throw around 10,000 kilos of grapes at each other making it one of the messiest and merriest festivals here. There are also wine-tasting sessions, grape-squashing competitions, live music, and a picnic with traditional dishes from Fideus de Vermar, a type of paella with noodles, cooked with Binissalem red wine. Free wine is served to everyone, from recent and past harvests. The central region of Mallorca boasts beautiful landscape and beautiful properties for those who want to experience authentic Mallorcan life.
Super sailing with the 52 SUPER SERIES
From 18 to 23 September, Puerto Portals will host this prestigious 52 SUPER SERIES, one of the world’s leading grand prix monohull yacht racing circuits. After its 10th anniversary last year in Barcelona, it makes its way to one of Mallorca’s most exclusive and perfectly positioned nautical and leisure marinas, only 10 kilometres away from Palma. Ten teams from various nations will hit the Mediterranean to battle it out in around ten races testing different skills. The 2023 season has seen 4 regattas so far, starting on 2 May in Saint Tropez and the final is here in Puerto Portals. This is sure to be a nail-biting finale. The island’s southwest is also home to some of the most exclusive neighbourhoods. From Bendinat, Puerto Portals, to Santa Ponsa, explore some of the most magnificent properties on the market today.
Classical music returns to Mallorca
At the end of September, Port de Sóller hosts its annual Festival de Música Clásica in the picturesque Museo de la Mar. First-class musicians from around the world come to perform the best of classical music. Mallorca’s western coast is one of the most sought-after on the island, due to the dramatic landscape and traditional towns where you may find the property of your dreams.
